Stay at The Old Oak Hotel

About Us

Perched proudly on the Mangōnui waterfront since 1861, The Old Oak blends historic charm with modern comforts. Today, the fully restored boutique hotel is surrounded by lush gardens inspired by Northland’s colonial heritage and native bush. Thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces, a gallery showcasing local art, and warm, personal hospitality invite you to slow down and soak in the character and tranquility of this special place.

A Storied Past

Built in 1861 by Scottish settler John McIntosh, The Old Oak began its journey as the Mangonui Hotel. Using local kauri timber, McIntosh crafted the original building and adjoining cottage with the skill of a seasoned boat builder—a legacy still evident today.

In its early years, the hotel welcomed kauri millers, flax workers, and passengers from steamships like the S.S. Clansman, who regularly called into Mangonui. As the town grew, so did the hotel’s reputation.

By 1906, it became the Settlers Hotel, and just four years later, it was renamed the Old Oak Hotel, inspired by the large oak tree planted out front in the 1870s—now a local icon.

Over the decades, the property has seen many lives: a private home, boarding house, craft shop, and restaurant. A second oak tree now grows in the courtyard, and after extensive restorations, the building proudly lives on as The Old Oak Boutique Hotel, welcoming travellers once again.
